The Simulation & Laboratory (S&L) Campus Lead Faculty aids the Associate Director of S&L Operations to coordinate SoN simulation & laboratory activities at their campus. They collaborate with their counterpart at the other campus to ensure all policies are supported, and instructional and administrative procedures are conducted consistently between sites. They manage the S&L as a learning environment which supports student attainment of course competencies.

The faculty in this role is considered an expert in simulation, evidenced, in part, by current membership in at least one of the following professional simulation organizations: Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), or International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation (INACLS). This faculty will hold a Healthcare Simulation Educator Certification within 18 months of hiring to this role.

Workdays and times vary depending on the SoN courses’ schedule for each semester. Duties include but are not limited to:

Major Responsibility One: School of Nursing Lab and Simulation Operations

  1. Maintain current knowledge and best practices of simulation activities.
  2. Establish a semester schedule for S&L in sync with curriculum needs for all programs.
  3. Oversee the Open Lab Scheduling system to track student attendance.
  4. Oversee availability of supplies and equipment for all programs at the campus to include:
    1. Maintain accurate master supplies inventory according to established par level.
    2. Complete full inventory each academic year (spring semester)
    3. Make recommendations to the S&L Associate Director for new equipment.
    4. Report and follow through any needed facilities, buildings, or room repairs or improvements. 
  5. Oversee maintenance and proper function of all S&L mannikins and laboratory equipment to include:
    1. Maintain simulation mannikins and other lab equipment in working order.
    2. Manage equipment repair.
    3. Initiate assistance from campus IT and/or vendor representatives as needed, with follow through for resolution of any malfunction.
    4. Direct end-of-semester terminal cleaning of workspace, mannikins and equipment.
    5. Arrange for hazardous waste (sharps) disposal.
    6. Arrange for laundry pick up for all campus locations.
  6. Confirm assigned duties for their campus S&L personnel are completed. Provides guidance as needed. 
  7. Select and supervise skills lab student workers. 
  8. Manage any emergency situations on site and direct students, faculty, and Extended Learning staff (as needed) for everyone’s safety.
  9. Respond to untoward events as needed, such as a faculty absence, or facility physical plant event impacting operations.

Major Responsibility Two: Student and Faculty Support/Instruction

  1. Collaborate with subject matter experts (Course Lead (CL)/Course Coordinators (CC) &/or Program Coordinator (PC)) minimally once a semester, to:
    1. Provide S&L activities that support student achievement of Course Learning Outcomes (competencies).
    2. Ensure practice currency of S&L activities.
  2. Ensure simulation activities, including those using standardized patients or interprofessional collaborations, met INACLS standards, including:
    1. Maintain currency of simulation pre and post activities in Elsevier.
    2. Update Elsevier simulation scenarios and products each semester.
    3. Simulation theaters are prepared for the assigned scenarios to promote realism and equipment is operating before start time.
    4. Simulation Faculty are present for each stage of simulation activity. 
    5. Simulation Faculty or Simulation Technician are present to operate the manikin during scenarios and guide Clinical Faculty with progression and cues required for the scenario.
    6. Simulation Faculty either assist or facilitate every debriefing considering the Clinical Faculty’s experience and completion of the Debriefing Training Module and competency sign-off.
  3. Identify and bring forward new simulation opportunities to integrate into the nursing curriculum.
  4. Support laboratory instructional activities, to include:
    1. Orient clinical faculty to S&L facilities, relevant policies, procedures, and Handbook.
    2. Direct clinical faculty to simulation training; maintain records of such training completion.
    3. Promote / support clinical faculty to develop student’s clinical judgement and acquisition of competency as needed.
    4. Set up the equipment needed based on course learning outcomes and competencies in accordance with the course syllabus.
    5. Intervene as needed if equipment is mishandled or lab procedures are not followed.
    6. Verify all faculty and staff are performing their respective duties.
    7. Serve as a mentor to clinical faculty for remediation of high-risk students identified by faculty.
  5. Serve as a resource to address faculty, student, or staff concerns. Follow through to resolve issues with appropriate personnel.
  6. Serve as a clinical resource for remediation and tutoring encompassing theory and clinical learning. May provide remediation instruction or proctoring of SafeMedicate exams if needed.

Major Responsibility Three:  Regulatory and Accreditation

  1. Participate in SoN Faculty, Curriculum, and S&L meetings.
  2. Collaborate with relevant personnel to maintain currency of S&L policies and procedures, and the S&L Handbook according to Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation standards.
  3. Assist the S&L Associate Director and collaborate with other Campus Lead to attain and maintain SSH accreditation.
  4. Assist the S&L Associate Director and collaborate with other Campus Lead to conduct quality improvement activities which may include:
    1. Faculty orientation and S&L training.
    2. Assessment of simulation effectiveness to meet student learning outcomes.
    3. Evaluation of faculty and student satisfaction with laboratory and simulation experiences.
    4. Analysis of data to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation for the integration of simulation in clinical education.
    5. Application of simulation research evidence and best practices
    6. Represent the School of Nursing to include exhibiting or demonstrating the nursing practice laboratory and its capabilities to selected groups of visitors.

 Minimum qualifications:

  • A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Master of Public Health (MPH).
  • Recent direct clinical or teaching nursing work experience within the previous five years.
  • State licensure by the California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Meet the SoN requirements stated in Faculty Health Compliance Policy
  • Previous simulation experience within the past five years
  • Member of a national simulation organization
    • If not currently certified, within 18 months, the Campus Lead Faculty will become certified as CHSE (Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator) or CHSOS (Certified Healthcare Simulations Operations Specialist).  
  • Per California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work from a location outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Simulation management experience
  • Simulation certification - CHSE (Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator) or CHSOS (Certified Healthcare Simulations Operations Specialist). 
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience. This is a part time, .27 FTE, position which varies from 3 to 4 days per week.

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,836 - $6,240 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,007 – $12,594 per full-time month
