The Department of Art, Media, and Design at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Spring 2025 to teach AMD 414: Design and Invention. The course meets on Fridays from 10:30a.m. to 1:20 p.m. and encompasses both lecture and lab. Successful candidates will possess a background in developing strong design concepts and in employing “design thinking” to address challenging problems.

Course Description:

Explores methods of creative development for invention and moves from concept to visual design to creation. The focus is on harnessing the imagination as a tool for invention, with design as the conduit for the development and articulation of new concepts. This course incorporates hands-on making and computer technologies and draws on historical and contemporary examples of invention with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary development of ideas. 

Minimum qualifications:

  • A master's degree or equivalent art and design experience 
  • Knowledge of design and prototyping (or making)
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Current portfolio of art/media/design
  • Experience teaching art or design at the University level
  • Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A Master of Fine Arts degree
  • Versed in the history of design thinking and invention, with a unique creative practice that involves prototyping of some kind
  • Artists and designers whose practice addresses social issues are encouraged to apply
  • Two years of teaching experience at the university level
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $8,500 per full-time month

The salary schedule information for the Lecturer – Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer A - AY: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range Lecturer B - AY: $6,221 - $13,224 per full-time month
