FOUNDING PROGRAM DIRECTOR

The College of Business' mission is “to inspire the practice of Responsible Business, balancing profit, people, ethics, equity, and plan; we promote the success of our ethnically and economically diverse students by facilitating engaged learning involving real-world challenges, conducting practice-based relevant research, and collaborating with community partners.” This position offers opportunities to a senior faculty to develop a viable Program in Agribusiness and Supply Chain Management. The Agribusiness industry in the Central Coast region of California focuses on perishable specialty crops. The position is supported by a partial endowment from key donors in the industry who see the need for this program in the Central Coast Area. The Central Coast is home to several Agriculture companies such as Tanimura and Antle, Taylor Farms, and Driscolls.

This is a twelve-month appointment because the founding Program Director needs to network with practitioners to develop a support network for the program. This includes working with local growers, packers, and other agriculture companies. The Program Director should have industry connections to associations such as the Association of Supply Chain Managers (ASCM), the Institute of Supply Management (ISM), and the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA).

In order to be successful, the Founding Program director will also need to inspire students, who come mostly from backgrounds in which they were the first to go college. CSUMB and the College of Business pride themselves on promoting student social mobility. In 2024, CSUMB was ranked number 2 among the Western Region in social mobility by the US. News and World Report.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creating a viable Agribusiness and Supply Chain Management (ASCM) Program that attracts students
  • Network with industry partners and key practitioner associations to provide internships and careers for students and build awareness among agribusinesses and affiliates in the perishable supply chain for specialty crops; the agribusiness industry comprises packers & shippers, and other community stakeholders; a professional network is critical
  • Developing an effective curriculum, benchmarking the best teaching practices of operations and supply chain management, and their application to agribusiness
  • Collaborating with the Dean and other CSUMB colleagues to raise this Program's profile and garner grants and other donor funding
  • Teaching upper-division courses and graduate-level courses in Operations Management/ Supply Chain Management/ Transportation/ Logistics/ Purchasing & Procurement/ Enterprise Resource Planning/ Agribusiness-centric courses
  • Create a demonstrable commitment to research, following academically qualified expectations as outlined by the AACSB. Some track record of published research is critical.
  • Demonstrating capability in engaging student learning in an outcomes-based educational environment
  • Participating actively in college and university committees and exercising collaborative peer leadership
  • Willingness to mentor students and enable their career goals through introduction and referrals to firms in operations and supply chain management
  • Teaching 5 credits per semester for the first two years and thereafter teaching 8 credits per semester; release time for external networking

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management, or related fields such as Operations, Logistics, Transportation, or Project
  • Management by the time of appointment from an APA-accredited doctoral program from a Regional and/or AACSB-accredited doctoral program
  • Passionate about teaching, preferably evidenced by good student evaluations; must demonstrate teaching capabilities
  • Demonstrated leadership qualifications to build cohesive faculty teams; the founding program director acts as a faculty lead among peers, which is very similar to the managing partner in a law firm
  • Well-developed Interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues are essential
  • Demonstrated Experience in working with industry and practitioner associations; must have a good background in developing industry networks
  • Ability to teach effectively in a wide range of courses, mainly in Operations/ Supply Chain Management/Logistics/ Purchasing and Procurement/ Enterprise Resource Planning, and application of such disciplinary areas in agribusiness-centric courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels
  • Experience working effectively in an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community and business community

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic training and/or research in Operations Management/ Supply Chain Management/ Transportation/ Logistics/ Purchasing & Procurement/ Enterprise Resource Planning applicable to agribusiness
  • Experience teaching agribusiness-centric courses at the undergraduate level is preferred. Work  experience in Operations Management as related to the supply chain management, transportation & logistics industry applied in agribusiness is desirable
  • Experience teaching computer-assisted courses and online courses are desirable qualifications
  • Industry experience, especially in leadership positions, is preferred in the areas of Operations, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, and Enterprise planning are preferred

COMPENSATION:  

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:  $11,968 to $13,750* mo ($143,621 to $165,000 annual)

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, and CSU systemwide pay for comparable jobs.
