Position Description

    • Position Summary
    • ~OPEN TO CURRENT CSU EMPLOYEES ONLY~

      Full-time position available on or after April 6, 2026 in the Building Maintenance Department.

      This position’s responsibilities are carried out under general supervision. The incumbent is responsible for leading and coordinating the work of a small crew of journey-level electricians and semi-skilled assistants while actively performing skilled electrical tasks. The Lead Electrician lays out project work, prepares materials lists, orders supplies, oversees workmanship for compliance with codes and specifications, instructs crew members in safety and trade practices, maintains records and reports, and may coordinate with other trades on project activities.

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Inspect, isolate, troubleshoot, and repair electrical malfunctions using various test instruments.
      • Maintain and repair electrical systems including power, lighting, fire alarm, and access systems.
      • Operate electrical power-generating plants and other electrical equipment and systems.
      • Test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency.
      • Install, maintain, and repair new or remodeled electrical systems.
      • Fabricate electrical parts; perform incidental welding as necessary to complete electrical work.
      • Advise in the selection and storage of electrical equipment.
      • Estimate cost, time, and materials for electrical projects.
      • Participate in the maintenance and operation of an electrical shop.
      • Clean, maintain, and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.
      • Maintain work areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
      • Perform electrical preventive maintenance and repairs in accordance with established schedules.
      • Read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications to determine work methods and procedures.
      • Plan, lay out, and schedule electrical work to ensure efficient use of materials and labor.
      • Lead, instruct, and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of electricians and assistants.
      • Provide instruction and on-the-job training to less skilled workers.
      • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
      • Inspect related work performed by contractors.
      • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
      • Coordinate electrical work with other trades to ensure safe and timely completion of projects.
      • Assist in developing cost estimates, work sequences, and project schedules.
      • Ensure that work performed meets quality requirements and specifications.
      • Advise supervisors or managers on work progress, materials needs, and problems encountered.
      • Participate in the design and modification of electrical systems.
      • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
      • Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.
      • Prepare standard reports, time sheets, and material requisitions.
      • Maintain shop inventory and assist in ordering parts, materials, and supplies.
      • Ensure all work complies with applicable codes, rules, regulations, and campus policies.
      • Monitor and maintain preventive maintenance schedules and service logs.
      • Assist in the development and maintenance of campus electrical standards and safety programs.
      • Support adherence to university, state, and federal codes and safety regulations.
      • May provide input on performance evaluations and work planning.
      • Maintain effective working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, and other trades.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the electrical maintenance and operations program.
      • May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development, based on department and/or campus needs, to stay current with industry standards.
      • At the direction of appropriate administrator, may provide support to other areas as needed.
      • The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, a logical assignment to this classification, or if it involves performing duties of a lower-level classification as required.

    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program.

      Experience: In addition to the experience required of the Electrician, the abilities of a Lead Electrician normally would be acquired through one (1) to two (2) years of experience as a journey-level electrician that included work coordination responsibilities.

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • California General Electricians Certification.
      •  Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the electrical trades.
      • NICET Fire Alarm Systems Certification.
      •  Previous experience in installing, maintaining, and repairing fire alarm systems.
      •  Previous experience with NOTIFIER systems in fire alarm systems.
      •  Knowledge of medium and high voltage, switchgear, and power distribution.
      •  Previous journey-level electrical trades experience in an educational or academic institution.
    • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

      • Knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the electrical trade.
      • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations, including the National Electrical Code and California Electrical Code.
      • Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the electrical trade.
      • General knowledge of other trade areas.
      • Working knowledge of job design and work sequencing for electrical maintenance and renovation projects.
      • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment.
      •  Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
      • Ability to install, maintain, modify, and repair electrical apparatus, equipment, and systems.
      • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications.
      •  Ability to make rough sketches and estimate the cost, time, and materials needed for electrical projects.
      •  Ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of hand and power tools and test equipment used in the electrical trade.
      • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot electrical system problems and determine effective repair methods.
      • Ability to lead, instruct, and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of electricians and assistants.
      • Ability to plan, lay out, schedule, and inspect the work of others for compliance with codes, specifications, and safety standards.
      • Ability to provide instruction and training to less skilled employees.
      • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports on materials, labor, and project progress.
      • Ability to work independently and with others cooperatively.
      • Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures. 
      • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position and perform arithmetic calculations as required.
      • Ability to use sound judgment and initiative in performing assigned work.
      • Ability to analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
    • License or Certifications

      • Possession of a valid California driver’s license is required.

    • Salary Range
    • Anticipated starting salary will be $6,705 (step 1) – $7,116 (step 4) per month plus excellent paid benefits. Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations. Full range Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist.  Full $6,705 (step 1) – $9,768 (step 20) per month.
